Prospective Cadets and Families,

Welcome to the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the Nautilus (SSN-571) Division/Training Ship Nathan Hale. We’re happy that you’ve found us. We are stationed at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut and normally meet the second full weekend of every month from Saturday morning, overnight, to Sunday afternoon. The USNSCC is comprised of two separate programs, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the Naval League Cadet Corps. The League Cadets are for children aged 10-13, while Sea Cadets are for young adults aged 13-18 (or graduation of high school or 19 years old whichever comes first). The Sea Cadets are sponsored by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Navy League of the United States. We are supported by other military and volunteer organizations.

Our goal is not to indoctrinate young people into the military but to build leaders of character by encouraging learning at all levels, support, life skills, and morals while exploring paths in the uniformed and volunteer services of our nation. Traditionally, our unit focuses on seamanship and sea-based services such as the Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. The USNSCC nationally provides countless opportunities to explore skills from seamanship to aircraft, land navigation, photography, medical services, special forces, food services, law, and many other skills. There are even opportunities for international exchange programs to countries such as Australia, India, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, and more.

The adults that serve to guide and instruct the cadets are all volunteers. Some with and some without a military background. There are three types of adult volunteer:
1. Officer/Midshipman*/Instructor - Includes monthly drill commitment, course and training requirements on an
annual basis. Must be 21 years or older (see note about Midshipmen below).
For more information on this,
     contact us.

*Midshipmen must have been prior Sea Cadets having attained the rate of at least E-3, be at least 18 years
old and have graduated from high school - Nautilus (SSN-571) Division takes midshipmen on a case by
       case basis only.
2. Auxiliary - Must be 21 years or older (exceptions made for active duty military). No monthly or annual
     commitment except one online course.
3. Guest speaker for a single time or for a series of instruction - This volunteer is not enrolled and no
commitment is required. May not be left alone with cadets at any time.
If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know. Please note that all adult volunteers in #s 1 & 2 above become mandated reporters, must undergo a background check prior to enrollment.

The program has taught me much and I have made friends that will last a lifetime. I highly recommend it to anyone between the ages of 10-18 whether or not they decide to go into the military.

Very Respectfully,
ENS Keith Cross, USNSCC
Commanding Officer, Nautilus (SSN-571) Division
